Laughs for Learning is an evening of comedy, dinner, drinks, and desserts, as well as an auction/fundraiser for UMCS.
The event will be held Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 6:30-10:00 p.m. at Yoshi's in Oakland, hosted by J.R. Havlan, former writer for The Daily Show, and features a 45-minute performance by Hari Kondabolu, "one of the most exciting political comics in stand- up today" according to the New York Times.
Dinner, drinks, and the silent auction open at 6:30pm in the Yoshi's dining room, and the show and live auction will start at 8:00pm. Pre- and post-show music by DJ Matteo.
There is also an online auction that runs from March 12th through March 26th. The silent auction will open on March 12th and close on the night of the event. Auction preview begins on March 5.

About Hari Kondabolu: Hari Kondabolu is a Brooklyn-based, Queens-raised comic whom the NY Times called “one of the most exciting political comics in stand-up today.” In 2014, he released his debut standup album “Waiting for 2042″ and was interviewed on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross. Kondabolu has performed on the Late Show with David Letterman, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and John Oliver’s New York Standup Show, plus in his own Comedy Central Presents half-hour television special. He was also a writer and correspondent for the Chris Rock-produced Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell on FX. A regular on the public radio circuit, he has appeared on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Studio 360, Bullseye and Soundcheck. He has also appeared on popular podcasts including WTF with Marc Maron, You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes and Too Beautiful to Live with Luke Burbank. A former immigrant-rights organizer in Seattle, Hari earned a Masters in Human Rights from the London School of Economics in 2008. In the UK, he has established himself with appearances on BBC 3’s Russell Howard’s Good News, Live at the Electric, and Channel 4’s “8 out 10 Cats.”
About J.R. Havlan: J.R. Havlan is a proud father and uncle to a small band of happy and curious Montessori students, and he is returning this year to once again emcee Urban Montessori Charter School’s annual fundraiser. J.R. spent the last 18 years writing for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart where he won 8 Emmy Awards and contributed to the show’s two best selling books, America: The Book and Earth: The Book. J.R. also wrote for the Academy Awards in 2006 and 2008 and has performed stand-up comedy on both The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

AUCTION SPECIFICS
At the event there will be two auctions:
- Live auction where people will have the opportunity to bid against one another on exciting, high-ticket items
- Silent auction, where people can view mid-range priced items to bid on silently (by writing a bid price down)
In conjunction with and preceding the live event will also be an online auction in which all community members are encouraged to take part, whether or not they attend the event. People can participate in this online auction throughout March and can bid online from any location. There will also be a link that you can share with friends and family so that they can bid on and win great stuff while supporting our school.
Why are we doing it?
California public schools are woefully underfunded and that includes Urban Montessori. This event will raise much-needed funds for our school, and we need everyone’s help to make it happen! Last year was our first time holding this event, and we raised over $150,000 for UMCS. It's our biggest fundraiser and comprises a significant chunk of the fundraising target of $275,000 for the 2014-15 school year.
How can you help?
Join the Auction-Comedy Event Planning Committee: We meet every other week, and some of us who cannot make the meetings participate via email to handle tasks ranging from securing the venue, food donations, organizing talent, brainstorming live auction items, entering online auction items into the database, and more. Sell tickets, help obtain corporate sponsorships, or attend the event: Tell your friends and family—your whole network about the event. We will start selling tickets in January so look for info. Ticket prices are $150 for early bird tickets and $175 for regular price tickets. Encourage those in your circle with financial means or your company or organization to support our school by sponsoring the event (sponsorships start at $2,500 and includes premium seating, a special reception, and acknowledgement). Donate: Last year, the UMCS community solicited hundreds of donations for our auction and for the event itself. Families and friends donated Tahoe houses, trips to Korea and Thailand, experiences that included fly fishing, soaring over the Bay in a small plane, a private DJ party, and sailing on the bay on a 60-foot sailboat. We also got hundreds of airline miles, weeks at summer camps and much more.
Do you have a skill or talent that can be contributed? Let us know! Also, we need your help in obtaining all types of items for the three auctions: live, silent, and online.

Risas para el aprendizaje es una noche de comedia, comida y bebida, igual que una subasta/recaudación de fondos para UMCS.
