About Urban Montessori

We are intent on creating a truly inclusive school community reflective of the racial and socioeconomic diversity of Oakland.  We recognize that creating a truly inclusive and respectful community where all students achieve, differences are valued, voices are heard, and power is shared requires constant dialogue and hard work; that we must create the safe spaces to openly check each others’ biases and assumptions, talk openly about power and privilege, and ultimately become models of the society and community we wish our children to become part of.  We put these values forward in hopes that families choosing to apply to Urban Montessori  share these values and goals.

Urban Montessori is opening a K-8 charter free public school located in Oakland, starting in the fall of 2012 (first year enrollment will be for grades K-2).  Our charter was approved by ACOE on October 11, 2011. It will be based on the teachings of Maria Montessori, Design Thinking and Arts Integration.  We are in the process of securing a school facility in Oakland, with a preference for the Lake Merritt area. Click here to learn more about how children will learn at Urban Montessori.
